Supporting Migrants Through Their Struggles

At KJB International Aid Advisory and Support Centre, we know that migration comes with countless challenges. For many migrants, adjusting to life in a new country means dealing with a complex system of regulations, from immigration policies to everyday needs like transportation. This can be especially overwhelming for those who have fled conflict zones and are trying to rebuild their lives.
One of the significant struggles for migrants—particularly Ukrainians fleeing the ongoing crisis—is the ability to drive legally in the UK. Thankfully, the UK government has recently made important changes to support Ukrainian nationals in this area. Here’s a breakdown of the new rules and how KJB International Aid Advisory can guide you through the process.
Extended Driving Privileges for Ukrainians in the UK
In response to the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, the UK government has announced an extension of rules that will allow Ukrainian nationals to continue driving on their Ukrainian licences for up to 4.5 years from their arrival in the UK.
This means that Ukrainian licence holders do not need to apply for a UK driving licence immediately. You can continue driving mopeds, motorcycles, and cars without worrying about converting your licence, which provides a sense of stability and independence during your stay.
Additionally, Ukrainian nationals with Ukrainian-registered vehicles will remain exempt from vehicle excise duty (VED) for the next 18 months. This means you will not need to pay the UK road tax on your Ukrainian vehicle, which can help ease financial pressures as you focus on settling into your new life.
Who Needs to Apply and When?
While these extensions provide much-needed relief, there will still come a time when you may need to apply for a UK licence. Here's what you need to know:
If you are a Ukrainian citizen with a valid Ukrainian driving licence, you do not need to apply for a UK licence right away.
You can continue driving legally in the UK for up to 4.5 years from the date you arrive. However, after 4.5 years, you must apply to exchange your Ukrainian driving licence for a UK driving licence in order to keep driving legally.
It’s important to plan ahead if you’ve been in the UK for a while. If you’ve been living here for close to 3 years, it’s a good idea to start researching the application process so you’re prepared when it’s time to convert your licence.
How to Apply for a UK Licence
The process is fairly straightforward if you decide to exchange your Ukrainian licence for a UK one. Here’s what you need to do:
Online Application: You can apply to exchange your foreign driving licence through the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). Visit the official GOV.UK website to fill out your application form.
By Post: If you prefer paper applications, you can request a D1 application form from your local Post Office. After completing the form, send it by post along with the required documents.
Post Office Assistance: Many Post Offices across the UK can assist with the application process. Visit your local Post Office for guidance on how to apply and what supporting documents you’ll need.
