If you’re planning to visit, work, or settle in the UK, it’s time to take note of some important changes. Starting 9 April 2025, the UK Home Office will be increasing fees across a wide range of visa and immigration applications. This means that whether you’re applying for a visit visa, a work visa, indefinite leave to remain (ILR), or British citizenship, you’ll have to pay more than before.
These fee increases have been officially confirmed by the UK government, marking yet another rise in the cost of immigration. Given these changes, it’s crucial to stay informed and plan ahead to avoid unexpected financial strain.
Why Are Home Office Fees Increasing?
The UK government regularly reviews visa and immigration fees to offset the cost of processing applications and funding the immigration system. Recent budgetary decisions have led to significant hikes, affecting thousands of applicants each year.
If you’re in the process of applying or considering submitting an application, now is the best time to do so before these increases take effect.

Key UK Visa Fee Increases You Should Know About
Here’s a breakdown of some of the most notable price hikes that could affect your immigration plans:
1. Visit Visas
6-Month Visit Visa: £115 → £127
2-Year Visit Visa: Increasing from £400 → £450
5-Year Visit Visa: Rising from £771 → £873
10-Year Visit Visa: Going up from £963 → £1,087
If you’re planning multiple trips to the UK, you may want to consider applying before these new fees take effect.
2. Work Visas
Skilled Worker Visa (Shortage Occupation List): Increasing by up to £99, depending on sponsorship duration.
Skilled Worker Visa (General): Fees will be adjusted based on job type and salary level.
Health and Care Worker Visa: Also seeing a rise, although this category remains a lower-cost option for healthcare professionals.
3. Settlement & Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)
The fee for ILR applications is rising from £2,885 to £3,029.
ILR grants you permanent residence in the UK, allowing you to live and work freely without time restrictions.
4. British Citizenship (Naturalisation)
Becoming a British citizen will now cost £1,605, up from £1,500.
If you qualify for citizenship, applying before April 2025 could save you money.
5. Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)
If you’re from a visa-exempt country but need an ETA to travel, the fee is increasing from £10 to £16.
This new system is being introduced for travelers from countries like the USA, Canada, Australia, and the EU (excluding Ireland).
What About Airport Transit?
A significant update has been made for passengers transiting through the UK. Due to concerns raised by airlines and the aviation industry, the government has decided to temporarily exempt airside transit passengers from requiring an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).
This exemption mainly applies to passengers transiting through Heathrow and Manchester airports. However, the policy is under review and could change at any time. If you regularly travel through the UK, it’s important to stay updated.
How These Fee Increases Affect You
With costs rising, visa applicants should plan strategically to avoid unnecessary financial burdens. Here are some key points to consider:
✔️ Apply Before 9 April 2025 – If you’re eligible to apply for a visa, ILR, or citizenship, doing so before the increase takes effect can save you money.
✔️ Budget Accordingly – If waiting is unavoidable, ensure you plan for the higher costs in your budget.
✔️ Seek Professional Assistance – Having expert support can help avoid delays, rejections, and extra expenses.
