Updated: Jul 30, 2021

Your professional future and the effectiveness of educational and career decisions begin with you. It is essential that you understand who you are, your individual profile of professional interests, and how you can use your personality strengths to make the best educational and career decisions.

Fulfilling your dreams requires discovering and skillfully using your potential and abilities. You need to understand yourself, oversee how others may perceive you, identify and evaluate your own strengths and weaknesses.

Recognising your own characteristics and skills is an important activity when planning your education and professional career. The way we think about ourselves has a massive impact on our lives - how we behave and relate to ourselves and other people. Self-assessment enriches knowledge about yourself.

It is evident that different jobs require different abilities and talents. These abilities affect the achievement by people of other effects and results of activities with a similar level of motivation and preparation incomparable external situations. Usually, the abilities people have are the basis of their own interests. Having any ability makes work easier. Can you imagine a writer without verbal giftedness?

As our abilities are related to our interests, it is worth getting acquainted with the typology of these interests. Interests and hobbies can be classified into 6 different categories:

  1. Technical (typical of a realistic personality type) is about repair, DIY, building, installing, assembling.

  2. Scientific (typical of a research type of personality) involves observing, analysing, solving problems, performing experiments and experiments, and searching for information.

  3. Clerical (typical of the conventional personality type) is usually associated with data processing, a compilation of reports, preparation of documents and preparation of studies.

  4. Artistic (typical of the artistic type of personality)

  5. it is nothing more than the artist's soul in dance, acting, playing an instrument, photography and fame and performing in front of people.

  6. Social (typical of the social type of personality) is mainly related to psychology, contacts with people, communication and explaining, supporting and giving, helping, teaching and influencing others.

  7. Entrepreneurial (typical of an entrepreneurial personality type) referring to politics, working with other people, leading, organising meetings and implementing projects.

Abilities are all that you can offer to your potential employer. Employers are not interested in your life story. If a prospective employer asks you about your past, it is only to predict your future behaviour at work. Skills and abilities are the product of your various life experiences. Each, even seemingly insignificant skill is a potential source of success. For many young people, the word skill spoils the mood. "I can't really do anything" - that's the most common answer. It is due to the lack of a complete understanding of this concept. Skills and abilities are not knowledge. Skills and abilities are a practical way to use knowledge, achievements, interests and experiences.

The best job, profession and career for you are the ones where you use your skills and abilities effectively in your preferred industry and the most favourable environment. Follow your interests, passions and fascinations. What counts for the employer is your skills and what you can do regardless of your diplomas and knowledge. Your job is to prove you have the skills and abilities for your chosen profession. For the employer, the way you apply for a job/internship shows how you will perform at your work. Your task is to illustrate how you will work once you get the job.

Suppose you consider yourself a hard-working and inquisitive person. In that case, it is better to show it at the interview than talk about it, for example, laboriously and meticulously gather all the information about the company and surprise the future employer with your knowledge of the subject—guaranteed success.

In addition to basic professional skills, employers increasingly expect their future employees to have abilities and interests. Having these abilities will help you get a job, keep you in the position, and advance your career. There is a high probability that the recruiter will ask questions about your skills in addition to questions about your professional competencies during the job interview.

Therefore, your abilities have a significant impact on your career path - you could even say that your abilities shape your professional future.

Remember that the beginnings can be difficult, but nowadays, these difficulties are straightforward to overcome. All you need to do is take advantage of career counselling programs, and you will be just one step away from making your dreams come true.
